Stormy Weather

February 25, 2015 by Wilma Johnson

It’s that time of year when anyone who can get out leaves town and posts up annoying photos of their feet, a pina colada and a palm tree on facebook – I usually love these photos  but the last week the Bay of Biscay has been chucking it at us weather described on my local swell check site as ‘disastrous and catastrophic’. Icing on the cake, the bars are all shuttered up until easter and the beaches have been closed by the police. I […]

Wilma Johnson surfs her dreams. (English version)

February 16, 2015 by Wilma Johnson

Wilma Johnson surfs her dreams. In her book ‘Surf Mama’, Wilma Johnson tells the story of how she left an Irish fishing village with her family to come and live in Guéthary and live her dream – to surf. Words Sylvie Barrens ( translation WJ) Photos Bertrand Lapègue   To be honest, Wilma the artist wasn’t destined to become a ‘real’ surfer, the type who heads off in December in the rain to catch waves  beach, and comes back with […]

Surf Mama et Ses Déesses in Biarritz

November 29, 2014 by Wilma Johnson

Surf Mama et ses Déesses. Exhibition at Jazz the Glass in Biarritz, opens 6th December The paintings in the show tell stories of women, real and imaginary. Stories of surfer women, flamenco dancers, of women transformed into goddesses, and goddesses transformed into women. My inspiration comes from travels, experiences, and dreams. Paintings may be inspired by fairy stories set in dark forests, iconic women like the adventuress Lola Montes, Mayan Madonnas in a church in Mexico where I spent Christmas […]

Surf Mama in The Connexion

October 21, 2014 by Wilma Johnson

Really nice ’20 minute book review’ in The Connexion. Just a little disclaimer – I was only referring to my own ‘dowdy 70s layered haircut ‘- no-one else has one, except perhaps the sheep . Need to make that clear or I may never drink Guinness in Dingle again! It had never occurred to me that wetsuit manufacturers do not offer a maternity range but Wilma Johnson noticed it as she was summing up the good (three children) and the bad (a […]

Indian Summertime

September 21, 2014 by Wilma Johnson

Autumn in Olatua isn’t so much the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness – it’s more the season of scorching sun, big swells and surf pros slashing across the waves. South winds ice the village with Sahara dust, thunderstorms like Hammer Horror special effects shake the house at night. You have to make the most of the Indian summer , because as anyone who lives here through the year will remind you, in ominous tones reminiscent of Game of Thrones…. ‘Winter […]

August in Olatua

September 8, 2014 by Wilma Johnson

‘August is party season. The village is packed, the bars are packed, the wave is packed. Apart from the usual crowd you have to negotiate swimmers, divers harpooning octopus, rubber dinghies and jet-skis.’ Some people leave the village for August, the crowds are insane compared to the rest of the year, but sometimes it’s more fun to just go with it, fiestas in Pamplona, Bayonne and every other town village or hamlet in Pays Basque. Parties every night in the […]
