The Port Eliot weekend turned into a bit of an epic roadtrip – starting with a nine hour journey to Cornwall, where we arrived at Maia’s place just in time for the open mike session at the fisherman’s bar. One thing led to another and we stayed up all night catching up, admiring her fine quiver of surf boards, fine cellar of wine, and adorable cat. As a result we didn’t arrive at Port Eliot until saturday night, and just […]
Lovely evening at Clapham Books, aperitif and reading in the garden. Ray Gange star of cult Clash film Rude boy and Chris Salewicz author of Joe Strummer’s biography Redemption Song turned up, so when we’d finished swapping big wave stories we got into a bit of punk nostalgia. From Surf Mama . 1978. ‘Hello are you Joe Strummer? Do you want to buy me a drink?’ I asked. It was a pretty lame chat up line and unusually forward […]
Getting tropical at the Big Green Bookshop in Wood Green, it was a hot thundery night and we’d come up with the inspiration of serving Tequila Sunset at the reading. On the road with the Art Car Boot Fair last weekend – would have loved to sling a surf board on top of the beautiful vintage Vauxhall Firenza and drive it away ….. but I was daytripping it on the train, and didn’t have time for much except the Boot Fair and a quick Full Brazilian in the bar afterwards. Next year I’ll take my dancing shoes and stay for the weekend. Art Car Boot Fair Hunt and Darton Café
SURF MAMA Wilma Johnson, Summersdale £8.99 Artist mother and wife Wilma Johnson was living a seemingly contented life on the west coast of Ireland when, in her mid forties , she was overwhelmed by the desire to seize the moment and move to the French resort of Biarritz to take up surfing in the Atlantic Ocean. However, Wilma’s dreams soon turned sour, with her marriage starting to suffer and her children speaking no French. Her first attempt at surfing was […]
